Bytes by Media.net

The Engagement Playbook

Turning the attention you’ve already earned into deeper engagement, loyalty, and revenue.

Section 01

The Shift Continues

The shift that brought you to Bytes hasn’t slowed - if anything, it’s accelerating. Search and social still send readers your way, but they keep more of the journey for themselves. Roughly 69% of Google searches now end without a click to any website, and on mobile, that climbs to around 77%, as answer engines satisfy more intent before a reader ever leaves the results page.

The opportunity is now to go deeper - the publishers pulling ahead are the ones treating owned engagement as a growing asset, not a one-time build.

The idea behind this playbook

Bytes isn’t a unit bolted on to your page.

The publishers who see the biggest gains with Bytes treat it as a regular testing & optimization discipline, not as a set-and-forget deployment. The Bytes experience needs to be curated, continuously optimized, and shaped and steered by your editorial judgment.

When done well, it can create a completely new, highly premium source of engagement & top-tier advertising dollars. This playbook is designed to help us build on that success together.

Section 02

The Foundation Audit

Let’s make sure the foundation is right. This is a periodic audit, not a one-time setup - run through it to confirm nothing’s been missed as your Bytes experience has evolved. Some of these may already be in place; skip ahead to where you are today.

01

Quarterback

  • Confirm one owner with cross-functional visibility & pull. Bytes spans desks that do not always operate against the same goals - editorial, product, marketing, social, and ad revenue.

This quarterback keeps teams aligned, shares results internally, and serves as the primary contact for the Media.net team.

02

Deployment

  • Confirm you’re deployed on your highest-traffic pages - not where you wish readers would go. Check with your account team if you’re unsure which pages qualify.
  • Confirm your social video library is connected and smart-framed clips are enabled. The algorithm needs volume to work - aim for a minimum of 20 videos.
  • Confirm captions are on by default. Most mobile video is watched on mute; captions directly improve completion rates.
  • Revisit your titles. Raw social captions read as off-brand on your site. Bytes can auto-generate cleaner titles for your review - if you haven’t enabled this, it’s worth a first pass now.
03

Measurement

  • Revisit your pre-Bytes baseline. Confirm you have the original average session duration, pages per session, and recirculation rate on record - you’ll need these numbers to keep understanding lift over time.
  • Confirm access to your Bytes dashboard and verify that Entry CTR and Videos per Session are tracking correctly.
  • Share your current traffic picture with your Bytes account team. Even a high-level cut by channel - organic search, direct, social, newsletter - enables sharper strategy going forward. (See Section 4)

The Plays That Work

3.1

Entry: Getting Readers Into Bytes

Bytes is an evolving experience for your regular and new audience alike. Like any product or destination, it benefits from continued visibility and promotion as it becomes a habit and feels intuitive for users.

Five actions can sustain and build momentum.

Make the experience your own - Give the experience a name that fits your brand and keep it consistently across your site and owned channels. Bytes should feel like part of your brand, not an external widget.
Place the Bytes widget below the article on your highest traffic article pages - It’s a vertical unit that mimics social feeds, and it creates a natural “what next” moment that can encourage longer watch times in the Bytes experience.
15-18%Viewable CTRsWe’ve seen 15-18% viewable CTRs and 150 seconds inside the experience when the widget is placed below the article.
Build a permanent destination for video and link to it throughout the site - A dedicated hub gives audiences a clear place to discover, browse, and return to your video content.
2-3XMore time spentWe’ve recorded 2-3X more time spent inside the experience when users enter from a video hub page as compared to an article page.
Add a floating entry point - A floating button can reach readers who do not scroll far enough to encounter an embedded unit.
Users’ attention is on the top and centre of the viewport while they are reading an article on mobile. Our floating player in the bottom right corner avoids these high focus areas for a completely non-intrusive experience - giving you a chance to reach and monetize users that didn’t reach the end of the article.
Promote Bytes externally - Use newsletters, social channels, push notifications, and other owned distribution to bring readers directly into the experience.
$20-30Session CPMBytes generates a session CPM of $20-30 for every user visit, so driving them into a customized social-like experience on your own site can unlock a brand-new stream of engagement and revenue for you.
Good to remember

Every additional entry point contributes to incremental engagement. Performance can be reported by entry source, helping us understand which channels generate the strongest engagement and time spent.

3.2

Test Placement - And Keep Testing

There’s no single right format - every publisher runs very different setups, each guided by our team and matched to where their attention sits. Start where your volume is, learn what converts, then expand.

Examples currently in market include:

NewsA news publisher using a mid-article hybrid carousel
LifestyleA lifestyle publisher using a social-style feed after the article
TravelA travel publisher using end-of-article infinite scroll on mobile
EntertainmentAn entertainment publisher building a dedicated video section

Test all these placements based on the structure of your pages and sections.

PlacementWhy it works
Hub pageHigh-traffic, high-intent surfaces; a dedicated home for video
End-of-articleA “what’s next” moment, very strong for recirculation
Mid-articleCatches readers already engaged with a story; natural pause point
Hero / Top of pageMaximum visibility; test against reader experience
HomepageBroad reach; best tested with carousel and hybrid feeds
3.3

Depth: Keeping Readers Inside the Feed

Once a reader is in, the goal is feed depth: more videos per session, longer duration, higher completion. This is where letting our technology work pays off most.

The biggest publisher finding so far

Algorithmic surfacing beats hand-built playlists - on both performance and effort.

In a two-week head-to-head, one entertainment publisher saw Entry CTR rise roughly 50% when the algorithm surfaced videos versus its own curated playlist, with more video starts overall.

Publishers have also found that maintaining playlists manually can sometimes become operationally demanding. Allow the technology to recommend and sequence content, while your editorial team maintains oversight and control.

Get the content mix right

Bytes draws on three building blocks. Test the ratio, as the right mix varies by vertical.

Your social videos

The library you’ve already built - plugged straight in, now working on your own site instead of only on platforms.

Smart-framed videos

Existing landscape footage automatically reframed into native 9:16 vertical, so your back catalog becomes feed-ready without re-editing.

AI + Human-Approved summaries

An optional assist that turns articles into short video summaries with no production overhead, always signed off by a human in the loop. Treat it as an extension of your editorial reach, opt in where it fits, and keep full control over what runs - it supplements your work, it DOES NOT replace it.

Good to remember
  • Front-load your strongest hooks. The first few seconds decide whether a reader stays - lead the feed with your most compelling clips.
  • Use Exit Point and Feed Depth to find where readers drop, then reorder. Sequencing is one of the easiest things to test and one of the most reliable to improve.
3.4

Amplification: Bring Your Own Audience to Bytes

The fastest, most reliable growth in the entire experience comes from the owned channels you already run.

The single highest-leverage play: Newsletter deep-links

An editor picks a video, grabs a deep link, and drops it into the newsletter.

Clicking takes the reader directly into your Bytes experience, with that video playing on your site, not on a platform.

The result - The most dependable spike we see across publishers. Publishers have recorded daily entries into its Bytes experience climb roughly 20x on newsletter send days, with revenue on those days running many times a normal day.

How to get the most from your newsletters and email blasts

  • Deep-link individual clips, not playlists.Specific videos consistently outperform.
  • Build a recurring slot.A “best clips of the week” feature - so readers form a habit.
  • Cross-promote across titles.One brand’s newsletter can feed another brand’s Bytes experience.
  • Use a visual grid of three to four clipsin the email rather than a single link.
3.5

The Next Tier: Once the Basics Are in Place

After Entry, Depth, and Amplification, three extensions can open up real upside.

Shoppable & commerce

Overlay shoppable cards on playing videos and set up a dedicated shoppable video page to drive affiliate and commerce revenue. We introduce it once the feed is engaging, so the products fit the flow rather than interrupt it.

One publisher built a shoppable “picks” landing experience this way without any decline in watch times.

Real-time & event coverage

Cover tentpole moments tied to your IPs as they happen. Real-time freshness is one of the strongest traffic drivers available right now, as breaking and live coverage increasingly outperforms evergreen.

During one major live event, a publisher had event clips live in the feed within two to five minutes of posting them to social, setting the stage for a completely new way to acquire and drive more users to the site at times of heightened interest.

Sponsored Posts

Embed sponsored posts and content within the widget itself, and unlock an opportunity for zero-click monetization.

Section 04

Signals we need from you

Engagement patterns vary across news, lifestyle, health, finance, and entertainment - in content mix, ideal session length, and audience sensitivity. The more precisely we can tune per vertical, the faster the results compound.

This is a value exchange.

What you shareWhat you get back
Traffic by channel: organic search, direct, social (by platform), newsletter / email, referral, Discover, pushSpecific clip-to-article matching recommendations based on how your readers actually arrive.
Engagement metrics alongside: engagement rate, avg. engagement time, pages per sessionFeed sequencing optimized for your audience’s behavior.
Top landing pages by volume, by vertical, where possibleTargeted placement recommendations beyond standard best practices.
Mobile vs. Desktop splitMobile-first prioritization calibrated to your actual traffic mix.
Within a week of sharing your traffic picture
  • We can send back a prioritized list of placement and clip-pairing recommendations specific to your audience.
  • We can co-build the on-site and off-site cross-promotion plan for Bytes playlists around your audience’s actual overlap rather than our assumptions.

What We Will Watch and Optimize Together

Benchmarks we can target together, based on what publishers are already seeing; they vary by vertical, placement, and effort:

SignalSeen earlyWhat it means
Session time+100 secondsReaders stay materially longer once Bytes is on the page.
Recirculation from video-to-article15-20%More users move to reading the full article after watching a piece of content within Bytes.
Bytes CPMs3–4x displayThe full-screen format commands premium demand vs. standard inventory.
4.2

Frequently Asked: Won’t This Cannibalize Our Social?

Bytes is additive, and the economics favor building both, your social and your owned engagement.

Feed Bytes with a strong social library.

A dedicated MRSS feed can ensure we always have a good base of content to promote in the experience.

You keep the audience and the data.

A view on your site builds your first-party relationship and signal. This is increasingly what advertisers pay a premium for.

It recirculates to you, not the platform.

A Bytes view shows more of your content; a platform view shows more of the platform’s. And there’s no revenue share with a walled garden on your own inventory.

4.3

The Whole Playbook, in Sequence.

Bytes performance builds through a repeatable progression:

Establish the right deployment and measurement foundation
Increase awareness and entry points
Test placements and formats
Improve feed depth and content sequencing
Amplify through newsletters and other owned channels
Introduce commerce, sponsored content, and event-led experiences
Build a model optimized for both engagement and revenue
Where we want to get to

Bytes works when it stops feeling like a unit on the page and starts feeling like part of your site.

We optimize; you steer, with the editorial judgment only you have and a read on your audience’s behavior.

The payoff is readers who stay longer and come back, and new inventory that earns significantly more. Let’s build it.
